افتتاحيات طلال سلمان-في جريدة "السفير"-تميل غالباً إلى الكتابة الأدبية، ولكنها تبقى في السياسة، كأي أدب أصيل، وتميل أحياناً إلى الشعر في النثر، وتبقى في السياسة. من هنا تكتسب خصوصيتها، من حيث هي نوع متميز في افتتاحيات الصحف، تلك التي تظل، في موضوعها وشكل لغتها، غارقة في السياسة... فطلال سلمان يأتي موضوعه من طريق آخر، غير مباشر، ولكنه هو الطريق إلى الهدف على نحو أكثر عمقاً وأكثر معرفة به. ولأن حصة الأدب، في كتابة طلال سلمان، أكثر من حصة السياسية-في العديد من افتتاحياته-فقد مال به الطبع، ذات عام إلى كتاب "هوامه" (تعليقات وآراء ومقطوعات ومواقف في الحياة والأحداث والأدب والفن.. ينشرها في الصحف الثقافية الأسبوعية..) حيث يجد طلال سلمان، ربما، حريته أكثر ويشبع رغبات عنده كانت تفتش عن مسارب جانبية لها... فهل، لهذا سمّاها "هوامش" التي قد تعني، فيما تعنيه، واحة راحة من السير، طوال أسبوع، "على الطريق.."، فوق أشواك السياسة وحجارتها ووحولها ورمالها المتحركة؟ على أن القراءة في هذه المختارات المقتطفة من مسيرة افتتاحيات طلال سلمان خلال الأعوام 1996-2001، تضع قارئها، الآن، في قلب الأحداث والتحولات السياسية العربية، بكل ما فيها ن صخب كثير وجنى قليل وتخبّطات في سلسلة هزائم، تضيء ليلها أحياناً شموع انتصارات قليلة تأمل الافتتاحيات أنها ستتكاثر عدداً وضياءً مع الأيام، والنضالات. وسيلمس القراء كيف أن هذه الكتابات تضع القارئ، "اللبناني"، في حومة الحياة العربية، وتضع القارئ "العربي" في صخب الحياة اللبنانية، من حيث أنها تبرز دائماً الجذر المشترك في نضالات مناضلي الوطن العربي جميعاً من أجل وحدتهم ومن أجل التحرر والديموقراطية والتقدم الاجتماعي.
