يعد قياس الآراء والمعتقدات والاتجاهات في غاية الأهمية، فهو يمكننا من التنبؤ بالسلوك والتحكم به. فنحن في حاجة إلى تحديد دقيق لمعتقدات الفرد واتجاهاته في مجالات عديدة، كالمجال التربوي والمجال الصناعي، والمجال الإكلينيكي، ومجال العلاقات الاجتماعية... إلخ.
ويختلف بناء أو تصميم أدوات القياس من مجال لآخر- ولكنها تهدف جميعًا إلى وضع الشخص- بناء على استجابته على متصل يمتد من القبول التام إلى الرفض التام. فيمكن تصور الاتجاه على أنه يشبه الخط المستقيم الذي يمتد بين نقطتين، إحداهما تمثل أقصى درجات القبول لموضوع الاتجاه، والأخرى تمثل أقصى درجات الرفض لهذا الموضوع. وفي منتصف المسافة القائمة بينهما توجد نقطة الحياد.
وقد قسمنا هذا الكتاب إلى قسمين يتناول القسم الأول منهما: مفهوم المعتقدات والاتجاهات، أما القسم الثاني وفيه: المقاييس، وينقسم إلى أولًا: دليل تعليمات مقياس الاتجاه نحو شعوب العالم،وثانيًا: دليل تعليمات مقياس الاتجاه نحو الاختلاط بين الجنسين، وثالثًا: دليل تعليمات مقياس المعتقدات والاتجاهات نحو المسنين.
