بعد انتهاء عصر الرومانسية بدأ الناس يشتاقون إلى أدب من نوع آخر... أدب واقعي يعبر عن حياتهم الواقعية ويناقش مشكلاتهم العصرية ويعبر عن أحلامهم وآمالهم في المسقبل بعيداً عن أحلامهم الرومانسية التي تبعد كل البعد عن حياتهم ومشكلاتهم التي يعانونها. وهكذا ظهر المذهب الواقعي في الأدب على يد استندال (1783-1842) وبلزاك (1799-1850) وفلوبير (1821-1880) ودي فو (1660-1731) وفيليدنج (1707-1754) وجي دي موبسان (1850-1893) واميل زولا (1840-1902).
ومما لا شك فيه أن كلا الكاتبين المسرحيين برنارد شو ونعمان عاشور كانا من أهم أعلام هذه المدرسة الواقعية في أوروبا ومصر؛ ذلك لأنهما قد تأثرا بكل ما يوجد حولهما من مشكلات وقضايا وانفعلا بها واستطاعا أن يعبرا عنها في أعمالهما المسرحية. وكان من أهم السمات الفكرية المشتركة بينهما إيمانهما المطلق بالاشتراكية ليس فقط كمذهب اقتصادي بل كمذهب إنساني أيضاً وهو ما حاولا أن يعبرا في كتاباتهما وهي النقطة التي في الوقت نفسه استطاعت أن تقربهما من الجماهير لإحساسهم أنهما يعبران عن مشاكلهم الحياتية وذلك على النقيض من هؤلاء الكتاب الرومانسيين الذين كانوا يعيشون في بروج عاجية غير ملتحمين بالحياة الواقعية للفرد.
