محمد عيتاني من مواليد بيروت عام 1926.
كتب القصة والرواية والمقالة، ومارس النقد الأدبي الفني، وعرّف بجوانب عديدة من الآداب العالمية.
شارك في حركة الأدب التقدمي منذ الخمسينيات، وكان حضوره الأدبي والفكري والشخصي فاعلاً في الحركة الثقافية والنضالية معاً.
من أعماله الإبداعية المنشورة: أشياء لا تموت (قصص)، متراس أبو فياض (قصة طويلة)، مواطنون من جنسية قيد الدرس (قصص)، حبيبتي تنام على سرير من ذهب (رواية) كتبت عام 1972 ونشرت عام 1986.
نشر آخر عمل إبداعي له في مجلة "الطريق" 1986، وهو الفصول الثلاثة الأولى من سيرته الذاتية بعنوان "نهر الزمان".
توفي محمد عيتاني يوم 20 آذار 1988.

يعتبر كثيرون ممن عاصرو الكاتب اللبناني "محمد عيتاني" أنه كاتب المدينة الأول، ومؤسس لغتها، ذلك أن أدبه كان شاهداً على أفول المدينة في الحرب الأهلية. ولكن بدلاً من أن يكتب محمد عيتاني المدينة انكتب بها، فصارت حكاياته مزيجاً من "الصبر" و"أربعاء بيروت" و"صخرة الروشة" وزقاقات الحمرا. يشتكي الشمس مع العم عبدون إلى الوالي التركي، ويكتشف ظله الذي يركض أمامه، ثم يذهب إلى "متراس أبو فياض" قبل أن يعثر على حبيبته وهي "تنام على سرير من ذهب" معلناً أن حكايات الأشياء لا تموت، الحكايات لا تموت، لكن الأشياء تموت وكذلك الناس. هذا ما أراد محمد عيتاني أن يقوله لنا في روايته هذه، لقد أراد أن يحفر الحكاية كي تبقى من الأشياء رائحتها، محولاً الذاكرة إلى كلمات...
وهكذا، يكون الأدب شاهداً على عصره، فعندما نقرأ محمد عيتاني اليوم كما قرأه جيل الأمس، نكتشف أن ظلالنا هي ذاكرة الكلمات، وأن هذا البيروتي الرائع أهدى مدينته حكايتها التي لا تموت.
يذكر، أن رواية: حبيتي تنام على سرير من ذهب صدرت الطبعة الأولى منها عام 1986 وهذه هي الطبعة الثانية آذار 2013.
