إن دليل النظام Dos كامل وشامل وهو المرجع الرسمي والشامل للنظام Dos ولكن هدفه هو ذكر كل ما يتعلق بالنظام Dos وليس كيفية استعمال النظام Dos في سياق العمل اليومي. وهذا الكتاب لا يبين كيفية تحضير الحاسوب كما لا يصف أجزاء النظام مثل لوحة المفاتيح وشاشة العرض بالتفصيل. والكتاب يغطي جميع إصدارات Dos حتى الإصدار 6 وذلك على حاسوب مزود بقرص صلب وسواقة أقراص واحدة أو اثنين. رغم افتراض وجود قرص صلب فإن الأملة قد صممت للعمل مع الحواسيب التي تملك سواقتين للأقراص. يصف الجزء الأول في الفصول إلى 4 أجزاء نظام الحاسوب ويحدد بعض العبارات والمفاهيم ويوفر أمثلة جاهزة تبين القدرات الأساسية للنظام Dos، ويشتمل الجزء الثاني الذي يؤلف القسم الأكبر من هذا الكتاب 5-17 تبين هذه الفصول كيفية تشغيل نظام الحاسوب وإدارة أجزائه بواسطة أوامر النظام Dos.
