يعتبر "لانكستون هيوز" (1902- 1967) من أهم شعراء الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية الزنوج وأشهرهم، يمتاز شعر هيوز من الناحية التكنيكية بقصر جملهِ وقوتها، وشعره دائماً يثير الخيال الإنساني، ويهمس بصورة جميلة تارة وبشعة تارة أخرى، ولكنه يؤديها بشيء من الفهم والمجاوبة وحتى العطف، وهو يغلف كل ذلك بموسيقى ساحرة، ومن ذا الذي يعرف الإنفعال بالموسيقى كما عرفه هيوز؟ إننا نكاد نحس أنه كان يعتقد إعتقاداً جازماً بشعار "الموسيقى قبل كل شيء". ومما يدل على ذلك كتابته لعدة قطع شعرية قصيرة للأطفال الذين هم أكثر الناس تأثراً بالهارمونيه العفوية، والإيقاع الرتيب، وفي تجربته الشعرية يكاد هيوز يتمثل بالنجّار تماماً، يدق مسامير الكلمة على خشبة العواطف دقاً مدركاً، ماهراً فناناً. والقارئ لشعر "هيوز" يحس حالاً ببساطة في تراكيب جمله، وبأن شعره في الأساس يعتمد على البساطة في الأداء، والبساطة في الموضوع، متوقعاً البساطة من القراء، الطرف الثاني في تذوق التجربة الشعرية، وشعره مع ذلك تنطبق عليه صفة "السهل الممتنع". ونقرأ قصيدة بعنوان: "العالم الذي أحلم فيه"... "أحلم بعالم لا يحْتقرُ فيه... أي إنسانٍ إنساناً آخر... حيث الحبُّ يباركُ الأرض... ويزيّنُ السلامُ الطريق... أحلم بعالمٍ حيثُ الجميعُ... سيعرفون فيه طريقَ الحريةِ المحبوبَ... حيث لا يستنفد الجشعُ الروحَ... ويكدّر الطَمعُ أيامنا... أحلمُ بعالمٍ حيثُ الأبيضُ والأسودُ... أو من أيّ جنسٍ كنت... تشاركُ في معطياتِ الأرضِ... وكل إنسانٍ حر... هناك يعلقُ البؤسُ رأسه في مشنقةٍ... والفرحُ، كلؤلؤة... يرعى إحتياجاتِ الإنسانِ... هكذا أحلمُ... ذلك عالمي"...
