مصر ساحرة، ولكن من تراه يعرفها على حقيقتها؟ السياح لا يحفظون عنها في الغالب سوى انطباعات عابرة: سكان يتحلون بالبشاشة، وأحياناً يستعطفون، ومواقع أثرية رائعة، وبضع صور عالمثالثية مبتذلة، ووجه أبوي لرئيس طيب القلب. ومصر في نظر الأسرة الدولية هي "القاهرة"، والمعبر الذي لا غنى عنه للدبلوماسية إلى منطقة من أشد مناطق العالم اضطراباً.
أما الوقائع فأكثر تعقيداً. النموذج الاشتراكي الناصري، الذي أعيد النظر فيه منذ كان أنور السادات في الحكم، يضمحل أمام ليبرالية زاحفة. والجماعات الحاكمة تستمد قوة إضافية من قواعد اللعبة الجديدة. وفي طليعة هذه القوى نجد الرئاسة، التي تبنّت منطقاً وراثياً، يقضي بانتقال الحكم عن طريق إعداد بارع من الأب إلى الابن. العسكريون يخلون المجال لرجال الأعمال، لكن الدوائر الحاكمة تبقي هي هي.
مع نهاية الدولة ـ العناية، أخذت الهوة تتسع بين الأغنياء والفقراء. والاحتجاج تخنقه ممارسات بوليسية فظة وتضييق على الحريات السياسية. واختلطت المعالم، بين نشر النموذج الانكلوـ سكسوني المنحط والعودة إلى الإسلام. هل يمكن للاجراءات الجديدة غير الشعبية التي فرضها قانون السوق أن تحدث انتفاضة جماهيرية؟ هل إن قيام نظام إسلامي أمر ممكن في الواقع؟ هل قال العسكريون كلمتهم الأخيرة؟
إن هذا الكتاب، الذي يستعرض أكثر من مئتي سنة من التاريخ، يطرح أسئلة حول الجديد من حالات التوازن وعدم التوازن في بلد يعتبر منارة في الشرق الأوسط. وهو يعيد إلى الأذهان "أساسيات" الأمة، ويصف التغيرات الجارية، ويعرض الغوامض الميحقة بالمستقبل.
