في أمسنا البعيد المنير، كنا نطلب مزيداً من النور من آفاق غائمة اللغة والعبارة. نقل أجدادنا علوم الأعاجم والإغريق برطانتها التي طوعتها طلاوة العربية. لكن بعضها بقي عصياً على الذائقة العربية، حتى أمكن استساغتها بعد حين، ولم يكن ذلك جهداً ضائعاً. في كتاب لي قبل هذا الكتاب، بعنوان "أوراق الخريف"، نقلت نصف كتاب صدر بالإنكليزية، قوامه ثماني دراسات حول نظرية الأدب الحديثة كما ظهرت في بلاد الغرب وتطورت فيها، وها أنا أنقل النصف الثاني من ذلك الكتاب. كانت استجابة عدد من القراء الجادين، في بلاد عربية شتى، مشجعة بوجه عام، مشفقة على جهد قد يحسبه آخرون لا طائل تحته ولا فوقه، في أوطان بلغت نسبة القارئين فيها دركاً.. لا نحسد عليه! ولكن.. لا بد من صنعاً..
