حكايات مستخلصة من رحلة ابن جبير التي انطلق فيها من الأندلس إلى الديار المقدسة في مكة والمدينة عابراً المتوسط، ثم سافر في النيل واجتاز صحراء عيذاب حيث عبر البحر الأحمر من مينائها إلى جدة، وبعد أداء فريضة الحج تابع سفره إلى بغداد فالموصل فحران، ليتوجه من هناك عبر سورية وفلسطين، عائداً من مينائها عكا، إلى غرناطة بحراً. تجربة حية أقرب إلى اليوميات التي تحتفي برصد الواقع المعيش، وإذا كانت تفتقر إلى النسيج القصصي ذي الحبكة الفنية الدرامية المؤثرة، فلا ينبغي أن ننسى أنها مأخوذة من رحلة حجية استطلاعية يسجل صاحبها فيها مشاهداته بدقة علمية وبيان أدبي رقيق لا يخلو أحياناً من لمسات نقدية مرهفة. إنها تأملات في ملامح الأمكنة التي اجتازها الرحالة من بحار وصحارى ومدن مر بها وقاسى بعض أهوالها. لم يكن مسافراً حيادياً، أو سائحاً عادياً ينشد الفرجة والغرابة والمتعة، بل نراه يبذل جهداً استثنائياً في قراءة طبيعة المكان وأحوال البشر، متمعناً في أجواء الصراع خلال مرحلة دقيقة ومؤثرة من تاريخ المشرق العربي، وهي مرحلة الغزو الفرنجي في ذروة التصدي له بقيادة صلاح الدين الأيوبي، قبل تحرير بيت المقدس بسنوات.
