سجلت أول ضربة معول للآثاريين ب.ف.غلوب، وجيفري بيبي، في شهر يناير 1954 في أحد التلال الثرية في البحرين، نقطة البداية لأحد أكبر مشاريع البحث العلمية التي قامت بها الدانمارك خارج أراضيها، ولم تكد تمضي سنوات قلائل على عمل بعثة هذين الرجلين حتى اتسعت رقعة العمل الآثاري بشكل كبير بفضل جهد أكثر من ثلاثين شخصاً من أعضاء البعثة الدنماركية التي نقبت في التلال الآثارية وفي المعابد القديمة التي تعود إلى تاريخ سحيق يصل إلى أربعة آلاف سنة قبل الميلاد. وكشف هذان الباحثان، تحت سمع وبصر معاهد أمريكية وبريطانية ذات عيار ثقيل، عن شواهد قاطعة من بقايا مدن ومعابد لا تترك مجالاً للشك بأن البحرين كانت الموئل الأول لحضارة دلمون الأسطورية التي بقيت عصية على الباحثين حتى عهد قريب، ولم يعرف منها سوى ما ذكرته عنها أساطير بلاد الرافدين، وما دونته وثائقها التجارية.
