Book Description
جوي مهر كستنائي جميل ذو علامة مميزة على أنفه، بيع إلى مزارع سكير، ثم نمت صداقة حميمة بينه وبين ألبيرت ابن المزارع. طالب المزارع المتوحش ابنه إما أن يشغل جوي أو يبيعه، فبدأ ألبيرت يدرب جوي على جر المحراث. وفجأة اندلعت الحرب، واضطر والد ألبيرت إلى بيع جوي للجيش لإنقاذ مزرعته. وفي الجيش واجه جوي — مثله مثل الجنود — صعاب الحرب العالمية الأولى. شن رجال المشاة هجومًا شرسًا بالمدافع الرشاشة على صفوف العدو ممتطين جوي وجوادًا أصيلًا آخر يدعى توبثورن. وقع جوي أسيرًا في أيدي الألمان، ولفترة قصيرة اعتنت به الفتاة الفرنسية الرقيقة إميلي وجدها. لكن إرغامه هو وتوبثورن على جذب مدفع ثقيل في أرض موحلة أدى إلى موت توبثورن بسبب الإرهاق الشديد. هام جوي على وجهه، ووجد نفسه مرة أخرى في خندق البريطانيين. وبالرغم من عودته إلى ألبيرت فلم يكن في مأمن من الخطر، إذ كاد مرض الكزاز يفتك بحياته، ودفع جدُّ إميلي مبلغًا كبيرًا لينقذه من القتل. إذ كان الجد قد وعد حفيدته عند موتها بالعثور على الجواد الذي أحبته وشرائه، لكنه عندما استشعر حب ألبيرت الشديد لجوي باعه إياه بمبلغ سنت واحد شريطة أن يظل يحبه إلى الأبد.
