ليس أقل من اكتشاف أن يكون بين أيدينا اليوم شعر أحمد حلمي عبد الباقي، هذا السياسي الفلسطيني البارز (1882-1962)، خاصة إذا ما عرفنا أن العمل على حركة جمع الشعر الفلسطيني ودراسته ونشره تكاد من أوسع الظواهر الثقافية التي شهدتها الثقافة الفلسطينية بعد عام 1948. بمعنى أن المرء لا يتصور أن ثمة ما بقي مجهولا من العشر الذي كتب، مع وصولنا لمطلع الألفية الثالثة. لكن ها نحن نجد أنفسنا فجأة أمام شاعر نادر، شاعر كبير، وقصيدة ذات مذاق جديد، مختلفة عن كل ما وصلنا من شعر شعراء النصف الأول من القرن العشرين في فلسطين، ومختلفة شكلاً عن كل ما أنتج من شعر عربي في الفترة ذاتها، إذا ما أخذنا بعين الاعتبار إخلاص صاحب هذه التجربة الشعرية لشكل وحيد، ظل يكتبه باستمرار، بحيث شكل التجربة كلها أو كاد، ونعني هنا القصيدة القصيرة جداً، أو ما يطلق عليه اسم (الرباعية). في هذا الشعر يتجاوز الكوني مع اليومين الأرضي مع السماوي، الإقبال على الحياة والانزواء الإيمان بالروح الإنسانية والشك في النفوس التي تحتضنها، وتحضر فلسطين باعتبارها مجازاً لكثير من هذا الشعر، عبر قصائده التي تشكل زمناً متصلاً، ممتداً، ومكثفاً في آن، يمكن أن ندعوه، زمن الروح، خاصة وأن جوهر تجربة الشاعر تتجاوز إطار الحديث إلى صداه الكوني في النفس، وحينما نتأمل السنوات التي عاشها الشاعر. سنكتشف أن أيام الضوء والعتمة كانت تتبادل الأدواء، ولمي كن ثمة ضوء في الإطار العام إلا وكانت عتمته فيه، كما لو أنه كان على كل جميل أن يحمل مرثيته قبل أن يولد في مسيرة النضال الفلسطيني، التي هي في الحقيقة أكثر سنوات عمر الشاعر زخماً وتشابكاً. إنها تجربة كبيرة، تحقق لا شك سيأخذ مكانته التي يستحقها وموقعه في المشهد الشعري العربي، فثمة شمي كبيرة توارت طويلاً، وها هي كعادة كل الشموس التي وعد بها الشعراء الأرض، تشرق.
