يلجأ عزت الغزاوي، في روايته هذه إلى تحوير المكان والكائن والتاريخ، فالسدير في الأصل مكان يمني اشتهر بالسيوف السديرية، لكنه هنا مكان متخيل يفترض أنه في فلسطين وأن أحداث الرواية تدور فيه. والحاج إبراهيم ويوسف ومريم شخصيات ميثولوجية، لكنها هنا تتحرك خارج زمنها وتتعايش دون أن تفقد خلفياتها الميثولوجية. إذن، تختلط الأمكنة والأزمنة والأحداث والشخصيات، بحيث لا يعود المكان هو المكان ولا الشخص هو الشخص ولا الحدث هو الحدث. يختلط كل شيء بكل شيء لكي يخلق الخلفية الملائمة للتيه التي تعيشه الشخصيات. ومن جهة أخرى، تتشكل لغة النص نفسها بشكل مواز للواقع، فيختلط السرد بالإنشاء وتختلط ضمائر السارد ماضيها بمضارعها مثلما تختلط اللغة الوصفية باللغة الحوارية. على مثل هذه الخلفية يبحث إبراهيم العمران عن "السدير" من خلال الذهاب إلى "بصرى" ويبحث عن ابنه يوسف من خلال حلمه بإنجاب "إسماعيل"، ويبحث عن زوجه عائشة من خلال بنت المبروك، ولذا فإنه حين يصل إلى شيء إنما يصل إلى بدائل غاياته لا إلى غاياته نفسها، أي أنه يفقد غايته في اللحظة التي يعتقد ونعتقد أنه وصل إليها. إن عملية التحوير الأساسية التي يقوم بها النص، لتكشف عن ذلك البعد النوستالجي الذي يلوح عميقاً في خلفياته البعيدة. فالمفقودات كلها يتم استردادها دائماً من خلال الحنين، من خلال تحويرها وتهريبها متخفية خارج زمنيتها ومكانيتها وكينونيتها... وهذا الأمر، وإن كان لا يؤدي إلى استردادها حقاً، إلا أنه يؤدي بالضرورة إلى الحيلولة دون فقدانها حقاً.
