بالرغم من أن جون شتاينبك يعد واحداً من أشهر وأحب الروائيين الأمريكيين إلا أنه لم يلق تشجيعاً كبيراً من النقاد الأوروبيين فيما عدا خلال فترة قصيرة من أواخر الثلاثينات. وقد أدى عداؤهم العام له إلى أن يصف النقد الأدبي، دفاعاً عن النفس، بأنه "نوع من ألعاب الصالونات غير المرحة حيث لا يحصل أحد على قبلة واحدة". أما النقاد فيقولون أن كتابة الروايات عمل رصين، وما الذي يمكن عمله إزاء مؤلف قادر على الإتيان بمثل هذا النقد العنيف للحياة كالذي في رواية "يوم الخميس الحلو" أو "الحكم القصير لبيبين الرابع"؟ إن النضج والذكاء والتفاني تلك الصفات التي ينبغي أن يتحلى بها الفنان الأصيل غير متوافرة لدى شتاينبك أو لعلها قد أفسدت نتيجة للشعبية والنجاح التجاري. والواقع أن التحول من النقد الأدبي إلى الوعظ الديني سهل بالنسبة لأي شخص يتأمل حياة شتاينبك ابتداء من نشأته في إحدى المدن الريفية الصغيرة بكاليفورنيا إلى حصوله على الشهرة والثراء في أواخر الثلاثينات بروايتيه "رجال وفئران" و"عناقيد الغضب" ثم دخوله عالم السينما والمسرح المتألق في هوليود ونيويورك. عن هذا الأديب يتحدث هذا الكتاب من سلسلة "أعلام الفكر العالمي".
