نتهى المؤلف من وضع هذا الكتاب في أيار-مايو من عام 1980، فهو إذن تسجيل جديد لمجريات الأحداث في أميركا، هذه البلاد التي عرف فيها الكاتب أميركا السعيدة، أميركا الثقة والتقدم حين كان فيها طالباً بين عام 1947 وعام 1948... ثم بين 1959 و1960، ومن ثم كان يعود إليها كل عام، وفي كل مرة كان يكتشف نواحي جديدة من المجتمع الأميركي المشبع بالحماس والعطاء، لكنه ما لبث أن تلقى صدمة رهيبة، فقد تغير كل شيء من زاوية المدلول، وتبدد الحلم، ولم يبق منه إلا الكلمات والمناظرات الفارغة، حتى الجامعة والشبيبة كلاهما فقد من أخلاقيته، وانحرف عالم التقرير بكليته عن جادة الواقعية، وكذلك انحرف الاقتصاد، وبدأت المؤسسات الكبرى تتعثر في إدارتها، حتى الإحصاءات، فخر الإدارة الفدرالية، لم تعد هي الأخرى معصومة من الخطأ. البلد كله ضل الطريق. لقد أصبحت أميركا بلداً هرماً يتلمس طريقه شأن غيره من البلاد الأخرى حين طرأ تغيير جذري على مقومات الحياة في فترة لا تتعدى حياة جيل واحد. فماذا حدث؟ وكيف يمكن لمثل هذا البلد أن يغوص في الفوضى والارتباك. فصول هذا الكتاب تنبئك بذلك.
