بلال وزياد، بدأا حياتهما مناضلين، وتحوّلا بعد أوسلو إلى مثقّفين من خلال عملهما في منظّمات غير حكوميّة. بدأا بين الجماهير، وتوهّما أنّهما ما زالا بينهما. هذه الرواية تتناول علاقة بلال بثلاث نساء، سما في مرحلة الانتقاضة الأولى، وسما "العائدة" بعد اتّفاق أوسلو، وسامية في الانتفاضة الثانية. بالموازاة مع ذلك أقام زياد علاقة بثلاث نساء (هنا، هالة، هانية). ووجدا نفسيهم حبيسي مؤسستيهما والمجتمع، بين الكتب والجمهور الذي لا يستطيعان الوصول إليه، وبين متطلّبات المانحين. هناك علاقة حبّ تجمعهما بالجنس الآخر، لكنّ سامية الجموحة تكسر حواجز العقلانية إلى ما يشبه الجنون، دون أن يستطيعا مواكبتها رغم جنونهما الذي غطاّه الغبار.
