وتدور أحداث الرواية في يوم واحد، وإن كان السرد الروائي يلامس تفاصيل العقود الأخيرة في تاريخ مصر بتعقيداتها السياسية والاقتصادية والاجتماعية، وتمثل أحداثها صراعا بين عباس الذي فقد أطرافه في حرب أكتوبر ويعيش عيشة بائسة بعد أن حقق النصر لبلاده، وبين نوفل الخطاط الذي أصيبت يده بالرعشة وفقد قدرته على كتابة اللافتات والشعارات. وأثارت الرواية عند صدور طبعتها الأولى عام 2004 اهتماما نقديا كبيرا، ورأى الأديب والناقد إدوار الخراط أنها ""أسطورة حديثة"" تجمع بين لغة شعرية ذات نبض كهربائي وبناء روائي متين، وقال الخراط "إن لحن الصباح بعالمها ذي الأبعاد الثلاثة: الشعبي والأسطوري والواقعي هي خير تعبير عن الواقعية الحقة التي تضم تحت جناحيها الحلم والفانتازيا والأسطورة وشطح الخيال ومراودات وذبذبات دخيلة النفوس وصبوات الأرواح".
