يتحدث هذا الكتاب عن نشأة وفتوة وشيخوخة العالم عز الدين ابن الأثير الجزري (1160- 1233م) ودوره كمؤرخ لأحداث القرن الثاني عشر الميلادي والوضع السياسي الذي شهده الحيز الجغرافي الذي انتمى إليه، ويعني المؤلف بذلك أصقاع الجزيرة الفراتية وديارها عموماً ويقصد بذلك تلك الجزيرة النضرة الخيرة التي كانت تسمي بجزيرة ابن عمر وما زالت إلى الآن وهي التي وصفت بأنها أعرق المناطق حضارة وقدماً، وقامت على أرضها أول مملكة في الدنيا على يد نمرود الجبار، وأفخر المدن وأعظمها كبابل ونينوى. في مثل هذه الأجواء السياسية كانت ولادة بني الأثير الثلاثة المشهورين من ولد محمد بن عبد الواحد الشيباني الجزري. وكان عز الدين أبو الحسن علي (ابن الأثير الجزري) الذي يدور حوله الحديث في هذا الكتاب أوسط أخوانه الذي بدأ حياته في سماع الأحاديث النبوية متتلمذاً على يد العلماء والأدباء والفضلاء والفقهاء والصلحاء حتى أخذ من علوم الحديث وفنون القراءات وأصول الخطابة ومنابع اللغة ومجريات المغازي والسير، إلى أن شاع ذكره، ودخل في حلقة المشاهير من فقهاء الموصل ومشايخها.
عن هذا العالم الجليل يدور موضوع الكتاب، مع نصوص مقتبسة عن مؤلفاته، وإخباره بحوادث ذلك الزمان مثل: ذكره دخول التتر ديار بكر والجزيرة وما فعلوه في البلاد من الفساد، وغيرها من أخبار وخاصة "سنة ثمان وعشرين وستمائة" وما رافقها من أحداث: كالغلاء في حلب، وقلة الأمطار بديار الجزيرة والشام، وكيف دخل الفرنج مدينة جبلة السورية وغير ذلك من أخبار.
