إن البيت الحرام بل الحرم كله مكان عظيم القدر وجليل، فهو أفضل بقاع الأرض، فمنه بدأت الأرض وفيه قبلة المسلمين وبيت الله الحرام، أودع فيه الله من السر الرباني ما شهدت به السنة الوجود. ونظراً لأهميته الدينية عند المسلمين خاصة ولمكانته التاريخية بصورة عامة عنى المؤلف "محمد بن إسحاق الخوارزمي" عناية جمّة بتأليف كتابه هذا الذي جمع في بين مناسك الحج وتاريخ البيت الحرام التي لها الصدارة والمكانة في الإسلام، فذكر فيه باختصار تاريخ البيت الحرام، كما وصف ما كان عليه البيت في كل فترة من الفترات التاريخية ما كان وما وجد عليه من العمارة، ثم يقيس لنا بين مسافات البيت بعضها لبعض، كالمسافة بين الركن اليماني وبين الحجر الأسود والمسافة بين المقام ووجه الكعبة.
ومن خلاله يأخذنا في رحلة جميلة عبر التاريخ، ويصور بقلمه ما كان عليه البيت عبر القرون والسنين الماضية ويجمع بين جماله ومهابته، وحبه وهيبته، وشرفه وعظمته لنراه بعين ومرآة الماضي. هذا بالإضافة إلى ما ذكره المؤلف من الأخبار، والأحاديث والآيات، وحكايات الصالحين كهبوط آدم وما يتعلق بها، وذكر لقبر النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم وما يتعلق بها من التواريخ والآثار المروية.
