يهتم هذا الكتاب بإثارة الجدل حول أسئلة مدى إمكان الدولة الليبرالية أن تقيم ديناً معيناً بقوانينها ومؤسساتها؟ وهل يمكن لمسؤولي الدولة الالتجاء إلى العقائد الدينية لتبرير القوانين؟ وهل يمكن عرض الرموز الدينية للأغلبية في المجال العام؟ وهل يمكن أن ينحصر منصبُ كهنة الكنيسة على الذكور فحسب؟ وهل يمكن للمشاريع التجارية الدينية أن تحجب خدماتها عن المواطنين المثليين والمتحولين والمتحيرين جنسياً؟ وهل يجب إعفاء الرافضين لمبدأ الخدمة العسكرية لدوافع أخلاقية من القوانين العامة؟ وهل يجب حماية الأقليات الدينية من التمييز كما هي الحال مع الأقليات العرقية؟ هذه مجموعة من الجدالات التي تسعى من خلالها الباحثة البريطانية سيسيل لابورد إلى إعادة النظر في الفصل الجذري بين الدين والدولة معتبرة أن تصنيف الدين يمكن الاستغناء عنه في النظرية السياسية من دون إنكار مركزيته إذ أنه من المستحيل الاستغناء عنه في تجربتنا الأخلاقية والروحية والاجتماعية، ومن دون إنكار تصنيفه الدلالي كأداة استكشافية مفيدة في عدة مجالات علمية. تقترح لابورد أن يكون تصنيف الدين أقل كفاءة من التصنيف السياسي-القانوني، إذ يمكن تفسير القيم الكامنة في حرية الدين والمساواة بين الأديان، وحيادية الدولة تجاه الدين ضمنياً من دون الرجوع إلى التصنيف الدلالي للدين على الإطلاق. وترى أنه كمنظرين سياسيين وقانونيين، لا بد من إبراز القيم المتعددة التي تحققها جوانب محددة من الدين. ولذلك، تعتبر نظريتها حول دين الليبرالية هي أولاً نظرية تفسيرية تتجنب فيها مصطلح "الدين" لتركز على القيم التي يحققها؛ وهي ثانياً نظرية تفكيكية ترى أن فضائل الدين ورذائله متعددة وذات أبعاد مختلفة
