لم يذهب الرحالة العربي المولود في طنجة، محمد بن عبد الله اللواتي، وشهرته ابن بطوطة (1304 ـ 1378م) إلى دول أوروبا، وأمريكا التي لم تكن قد اكتشفت بعد، خلال العصور الوسطى، باستثناء الأندلس (أسبانيا والبرتغال حاليا) التي زارها عام 1350، وزار قبلها عددا كبيرا من دول أفريقيا وآسيا، وقضى 28 سنة في ملابس الرحالة، قطع خلالها نحو 120 ألف كم، ووضع مصنفه المشهور باسم "تحفة النظار وغرائب الأمصار، وعجائب الأسفار" عام 1356. والذي اشتهر فيما بعد برحلات ابن بطوطة. وقبلها لم يذهب الرحالة الأندلسي المولود في بلنسية، والمتوفي في الإسكندرية، أبو الحسن محمد بن أحمد، والمعروف بابن جبير (1145 ـ 1217) سوى إلى الشرق، وجمع رحلاته في كتابه "رحلة ابن جبير". ولكن ذهبت حفيدتهما الكاتبة المصرية أميرة خواسك، التي اختارت لها اسم بنت بطوطة، تشبها بجدها العربي الرحالة (ابن بطوطة) إلى الغرب والشرق معا خلال السنوات الأخيرة من القرن العشرين، وجمعت رحلاتها في كتاب بعنوان "رحلات بنت بطوطة" صدر عن مكتبة الأسرة عام 1998، واحتوى على 224 صفحة، وزوِّد ببعض الصور الملونة لبنت بطوطة في بعض البلاد التي زارتها. أحمد فضل شبلول
