تحدد عقل في الفراش. تسربت إليه برودة القسم الذي كانت زوجته تشغله. استدار إلى ناحيتها من الوسادة فعبقت رائحة غبار طيبة. تثاءب طويلاً بعد أن استلقى رافعاً يديه إلى ما تحت الوسادة. إلى الكوة الصغيرة التي تعلو الباب، ارتفع بنظره فرأى النور وقد بدأ يتسرب منها. قدّر أنه سيكون نهاراً مستحساً يعبره هواء بارد وحاد. أغلقت شعاع آخر من شق الباب وامتد كحربة مستعيمة فوق اللحاف. كل ما له علاقة بالنور يذكره بعينيها المضيئتين. أحياناً يشعر أنهما قنديلان يحدان بدنها بالدفء والحرارة، بينها دافئ دائماً. حتى برودة الأمكنة التي يكون قد شغلها، تشعره بدفء ما. زوجته كانت من أجمل النساء، وهي لا تزال جميلة حتى الآن، لولا بطنها الذي لا ينجب إلا البنات. في البداية لم يكن الأمر ليغضبه، ولكنه اليوم بات يشعر بالعار. عقل شيخ شباب ولا ينجب إلا البنات؟ العلة فيها هذا أكيد. اخوته كلهم ولدوا صبياناً، بينما استفذ هو كل أسماء الخالات والعمات. رباهن كما لو كن ذكوراً حنّه وفوز وتمام يجدن ركوب الحصان كأفضل فارس خيّال. أديل وماريا ممتازتان في ترويض الأفاعي والحيات. جوليا ووداد لا تزالان صغيرتين ودورهما سيأتي في ما بعد. الجميع في القرية يقولون أن بنات عقل يساوين ألف رجل، لكنه غالباً ما يقرأ في أعينتهم حسرة كيف أن أحداً من صلبه لن يحمل من بعده مفتاح البيت" في روايتها عذوبة عبارة، وعمق معنى، واستشفافات تعبر كلها عن ذوبان الكاتبة في شخصياتها في سبيل اتحاد وتماهي يبعثان مناخاً يضع القارئ بالغياب في عالم حكاية نسجته الكاتبة بوحي من الواقع صادق وبإدارة إبداعها الأدبي الذي يحيل الأحداث والسرديات إلى مشاهد متحركة أمام عيني القارئ. هي تروي حكاية حمد الصبي الذي حل بين أهله بعد طول انتظار. وجاء أنه ذات يوم رفض استضافة الموت فهرب من العمر وصنع مشواراً وحكايات تروي عنه.
