أمين معلوف أديب وصحافي لبناني ولد في بيروت في 25 فبراير 1949 م، امتهن الصحافة بعد تخرجه فعمل في الملحق الاقتصادي لجريدة النهار البيروتية.
في عام 1976 م انتقل إلى فرنسا حيث عمل في مجلة إيكونوميا الاقتصادية، واستمر في عمله الصحفي فرأس تحرير مجلة "إفريقيا الفتاة" أو "جين أفريك"، وكذلك استمر في العمل مع جريدة النهار اللبنانية وفي ربيبتها المسماة النهار العربي والدولي.
أصدر أول أعماله الحروب الصليبية كما رآها العرب عام 1983م عن دار النشر لاتيس التي صارت دار النشر المتخصصة في أعماله. ترجمت أعماله إلى لغات عديدة ونال عدة جوائز أدبية فرنسية منها جائزة الصداقة الفرنسية العربية عام 1986م عن روايته ليون الإفريقي، وحاز على جائزة الجونكور، كبرى الجوائز الأدبية الفرنسية، عام 1993 عن روايته صخرة طانيوس. قام د. عفيف دمشقية بترجمة جل أعماله إلى العربية -إذ أن معلوف يكتب كل أعماله بالفرنسية- وهي منشورة عن دار الفارابي ببيروت. تميز مشروع أمين معلوف الابداعي بتعمقه في التاريخ من خلال ملامستها أهم التحولات الحضارية التي رسمت صورة الغرب والشرق على شاكلتها الحالية.

"Ce que la présence de cette femme a apaisé en moi, ce n est pas la soif charnelle d'un voyageur, c'est ma détresse originelle. Je suis né étranger, j'ai vécu étranger et je mourrai plus étranger encore. Je suis trop orgueilleux pour parler d'hostilité d'humiliations, de rancoeur, de souffrances, mais je sais reconnaître les regards et les gestes. Il y a des bras de femmes qui sont des lieux d'exil, et d'autres qui sont la terre natale." Parti sur les routes en 1665, le narrateur de cette histoire, Baldassare Embriaco, Génois d'Orient et négociant en curiosités, est à la poursuite d'un livre qui est censé apporter le Salut à un monde désemparé. Sans doute est-il aussi à la recherche de ce qui pourrait encore donner un sens à sa propre existence. Au cours de son périple, en Méditerranée et au-delà, Baldassare traverse des pays en perdition, des villes en feu, des communautés en attente. Il rencontre la peur, la tromperie et la désillusion ; mais également l'amour, à l'heure où il ne l'attendait plus. Amin Maalouf a déjà publié six romans : Léon l'Africain, Samarcande, Les Jardins de lumière, Le Premier Siècle après Béatrice, Le Rocher de Tanios (Prix Goncourt 1993) et Les Echelles du Levant.
