"لنختار مكاناً من العالم ونرسم على التل المنزل، لنسيّجه بالسور ونثمر الشجر من حوله، لنؤثث الباحة كما نرغب، بالأرجوحة ونضع الأصيص على حافة الشرفة، لنضع على المقعد فتاة، بجوارها الشقيقة، لنجعل من غلاف هذا الكتاب مساحة لافتراض الحديث الذي سيكون من بعد ذلك. الشجار ربما، بسبب سرقة فستان الأخت من خزانة الشقيقة دون أن تعلم ومساحيقها. لنقل أن هذه الحكاية خيالية، لكنها صارت حقيقية بفضل الورق".
لعل هذا المقتبس الذي يرد على لسان الكاتبة أمل السويدي عن رواية "الشقيقة" هو خير ما أرادت التعبير عنه عن رواية إفتراضية لحياة أختان شقيقتان هما سارة ومريم، رصدت حياتهما داخل رحم الأم، وبعد خروجهما إلى الحياة، والتي لم تتجاوز غرفة العمليات حيث فارقتا الحياة. "لقد انتهى الأمر ها هما ترحلان من النور إلى الظلام، فمنذ البدء كان العدم، حيث لم تكن سارة ولا مريم".
وهكذا، تقع موضوعة الرواية في منطقة ملتبسة بين الحياة والموت، جعلت منها الكاتبة حياة معيشة وكأنها تقول لنا ماذا لو عاشت كلتا الفتاتان، كم كانتا ستلهوان وتلعبان وتتشاكسان وهو ما يجعل النص أقرب إلى صورة عن حياة واقعية" تمظهرت عبر وحدات مسردية، تستخدم فيها الكاتبة تقنية اليوميات سرداً وحواراً، وتنتقل من الواقع إلى المتخيل وبالعكس، وتترك للقارىء فرصة إسقاط هذا المتخيل على الواقع، وذلك كله يتم بلغة روائية رشيقة، مقتضبة، تجنح نحو البساطة في التعبير. وبهذا تقدم لنا أمل السويدي نصاً روائياً يسهل هضمه، ولا تتعب قراءته.
