Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850), auteur d´une grande série de 91 romans interconnectés et coordonnés, intitulé « Comédie humaine », écrite entre 1827 et 1847. Dans le préface de 1842, Balzac utilise pour la première fois ce titre et manifeste son dessein de livrer une représentation globale de la société française des dernières années du XVIIIème siècle et de la première moitié du XIXème. L´écrivain réclame pour ce travail la méthode scientifique susceptible de lui donner ordre et rigueur, précision et portée intellectuelle. « Le Père Goriot », commencé à Saché en 1834, fait partie des Scènes de la vie privée de « La Comédie humaine ». Le roman s'ouvre avec la description de la sordide pension Vauquer, située dans la rue parisienne de Neuve-Sainte-Geneviève, appartenant à la veuve Vauquer. Plusieurs résidents s'y côtoient, dont Eugène de Rastignac, jeune étudiant en droit, un personnage un peu rustre et grossier nommé Vautrin et un ancien vermicellier ayant fait fortune pendant la révolution, retraité maintenant, complètement ruiné et veuf, surnommé le père Goriot par la veuve Vauquer, frustrée dans ses intentions de mariage avec lui à l'époque où il était arrivé à la pension, riche, bien mis et en possession de pas mal de mobilier. La plupart des pensionnaires se sont mis à l'appeler ainsi, le tournant en ridicule et le considérant comme sénile et diminué.
