إنطلاقاً من هذا الهم المعرفي يقدم الدكتور عادل مشعان ربيع كتابه "أساسيات التنوع الإحيائي" بغرض كشف الغموض عن هذا المصطلح وتوضيح معنى التنوع الإحيائي بتسلسل منطقي يبدأ بنشأة الحياة على كوكب الأرض مروراً بعمر الأرض والنظريات المهمة التي تفسر نشأة الحياة على الأرض وأهم المثالب والإعتراضات التي واجهت هذه النظريات.
كما يوضح الكتاب معنى النوع ومفهومه في الطبيعة، ويشير إلى كيفية حدوث التنوع حسب نظريات التطور ويبين أيضاً إيجابيات هذه النظريات وسلبياتها والأهم أنه يشرح التنوع الإحيائي بمستوياته الثلاثة، الوراثي ومستوى الأنواع والأنظمة البيئية، فضلاً عن العوامل الأساسية المؤثرة في التنوع الإحيائي ككل.
كما يناقش الكتاب دور الإنسان في التنوع الإحيائي بعد أن امتلك تقنيات التحوير الوراثي، ويكشف عن التأثيرات الإيجابية والسلبية للمنتجات المحورة وراثياً والرؤيا المستقبلية لها، كما يركز على دور الفعاليات البشرية في إيصال الأنواع إلى الإنقراض أو إلى حافته الأخيرة، ويختتم الكتاب بعرض لبعض المؤتمرات الدولية التي اهتمت بموضوع التنوع الإحيائي مع بعض المقترحات لحفظ التنوع الإحيائي قدر المستطاع في المنطقة العربية.
