إن هذا الكتاب يمثل أولى محاولات التاليف حول علم اجتماع الثنائي أو النظام الزواجي الذي يبدأ باختيار الشريك، وخصوصاً أن هذا الخيار أصبح حراً ومفتوحاً ومضطرباً وفقاً للحسب العام، فبينما كانت العائلات تقوم به في الماضي، أضحى الآن نتيجة لقاءات المصادفة، هذه التغييرات أدت إلى البحث في شؤون العائلة، وبالتالي؛ فإن أعمال علم الإجتماع المتعلقة بالثنائي اكتسبت أهميته أكثر من أي وقت مضى.
ولما كانت معرفة الثنائي المعاصر مهمة كونها تمس المسائل الأساسية في النظام الإجتماعي، تعددت إمكانيات صياغة هذا الكتاب وكيفية تقديمه "وكان أحد الخيارات وضع خلاصة وصفية ومنظمة للأبحاث لكنه يحمل سيئة تبعثر النتائج وعدم قابلية جمعها مع بعضها البعض.. وبدا من الأفضل (خاصة بسبب طلب المعرفة عن الشركاء الزوجيين نفسهم) اعتمادا أسئلة أكثر مباشرة لتشكل خط سير رئيسي مثل: ما هو الثنائي اليوم؟ كيف يتكون؟ كيف يعمل؟ وتضمين هذا التفسير ما استنتج من خلال الأبحاث...".
وعليه توزع الكتاب على ستة فصول ومباحث جاءت تحت العناوين الأتية: (الفصل الأول) –اختيار القرين ويضم: 1- الزواج من المثل، 2- هل أن الطيور على اشكالها تقع حقاً؟ 3- اختيار القرين أو اكتشافه، (الفصل الثاني)- الحب، ويضم 1- الحب والزواج، 2- الوهم الغرامي والحقيقة، 3- العقد الغرامي، (الفصل الثالث) – الأزواج المعاصرون، ويضم: 1- هل الثنائي في أزمة؟، 2- الزواج والمساكنة، 3- بناء الثنائي بالتدرج، (الفصل الرابع) – الدورة الزوجية، ويضم 1-قوة الدورات المرنة، 2- دورة الحياة، 3- من اللقاء الأول إلى الراحة الزوجية، 4- بعض المؤشرات، (الفصل الخامس) –العمل المنزلي، ويضم: 1- المواجهة، 2- وجهاً لوجه، 3- الواحد والآخر، (الفصل السادس) –الحياة الثنائية، ويضم: 1- التبادلات، 2- إدارة عدم الرضا، 3- التواصل، 4- النزاعات، وأخيراً: خاتمة الكتاب.
