هذا الكتاب يروي مغامرة البروفيسور الإنجليزي بروس إنغام في بادية صحراء العرب ومدي عشقه لها، وهو يعيش في قلب الحضارة حيث الطبيعة السخية الخضراء في أحضان مدينة لندن وريفها الذي يغلفه الغمام ليل نهار، أطل ببصره علي تلك الحروف القادمة من صحراء العرب القاحلة التي شكلت بالنسبة إليه كلمات غريبة لمحها في دفاتر بعض زملائه من الإيرانيين والباكستانيين، تلك الحروف التي كانت تبدو في عينيه كما لو كانت طلاسم رسمتها أيد ساحرة بارعة في فنون السحر، لكنها لفتت أنتباهه، فأحب أن يتعلمها وغامر بأن يتعرف علي مصدرها ومخارجها وأصولها، وكانت البداية. لم يكن البروفيسور الإنجليزي يدري أن مغامرته الأولي شاباً ستحوله أسيراً، بل بمعني أدق، هائماً يعيش حالة من الانغماس الكامل في عشق بادية وصحراء ولغة عربية وتفاصيل حياة لم يكن يتوقع يوماً من الأيام أن الأقدار ستقوده إلي هذا المصير.. أجاد لهجات الجزيرة العربية وتعمق في معرفة الخصائص الفونولوجية والصرفية للهجات القبائل حتي أصبح يحدد قبيلة المتحدث من خلال لهجته.. ومازال البروفيسور إنغام.. أو بو حسين الظفيري – كما يحب أن يكني – يبحث ويتدبر من أجل فك طلاسم سر هذا العشق الذي سيطر علي كيانه.
