رغم أن فكرة مجتمع المعلومات ليست بالفكرة الجديدة لأنها موجودة منذ أن وجدت المعلومات، فالجديد فقط هو الاعتراف المتزايد بأهمية هذه الفكرة والإلمام المركز على جميع جوانب هذا المجتمع وأبعاده. لذا فإن هذه الدراسة البسيطة سوف تلقي الضوء على مجتمع المعلومات فتشرح مفهوم هذا المجتمع وتعريفاته كما توضح خصائص وسمات مجتمع المعلومات ثم تعرض الخطوات التي يجب أن يسير عليها المجتمع إذا أراد أن يتحول إلى مجتمع المعلومات أو يمكن أن نطلق عليها الملامح الأساسية لبناء وتشييد الطريق إلى مجتمع المعلومات، ثم تعرض الدراسة أيضاً لنظرة سريعة لبعض مجتمعات المعلومات في العالم ونشأتها وتطورها ثم تستعرض التخطيط المصري للتحول إلى مجتمع المعلومات والذي بدأ منذ عام 1981 وتختتم الدراسة هذا العرض في هذا الموضوع بقائمة ببليوجرافية عن مجتمع المعلومات لمن يريد أن يتعمق في هذا الموضوع.
