يتناول هذا العدد من "ترجمات" موضوع يختلف عما اعتادت السلسلة أن تركز عليه في الفترة الماضية، وهو "تكنولوجيا النانو"، إستناداً على دراسة أعدت في إطار عمل مشروع تكنولوجيا النانو المتنامية، وهو أحد المشروعات التي يعمل فيها مركز وودرو ويلسون الدولي للدارسين، وهو مؤسسة بحثية أمريكية تهتم بقضايا مختلفة، منها هذا الموضوع الهام والمثير، إن الفكرة في هذا العدد بسيطة، وهي أن الساحة العالمية تشهد تطورات "أخرى" جوهرية، ستؤثر على حياة البشر بشكل اعمق- ربما- من تأثير تلك المشكلات المدوية المزمنة التي تهيمن على المنطقة، لكنها لا تزال خارج نطاق "جدول الأعمال" الإقليمي أو الداخلي، والأهم أن ما يبدو للوهلة الأولى أن معظم دول المنطقة غير قادرة على أن تكون جزءاً منها، رغم أن التطبيقات المحتملة لها- تبعا للنص- خلال العقود القليلة القادمة قد تحدث طفرات هائلة، لكن الجانب الآخر الهام هو ما تركز عليه الدراسة، وهو أنه رغم أن هذه الفوائد لا حصر لها، فإنها لن تتحقق إلا إذا تم فحص ومعالجة الآثار السلبية المحتملة لتكنولوجيا النانو، وهو ما يتم التركيز عليه بصورة توضح أيضاً طبيعة الجدل المكمل أو المترافق مع تلك التطورات. ويلقي د.رؤوف حامد أحد أهم الخبراء المصريين المهتمين بشئون التكنولوجيا، الضوء على أهم أبعاد ما جاء في الدراسة، موضحاً أين نحن من كل ذلك عملياً.
