"جيمس فنبمور كوبر" روائي أميركي، ولد في بير لنغتن، ولاية نيوجيرسي، في عائلة أرستقراطية، قضى جانباً كبيراً من طفولته في مناطق حدودية. ودخل بعد إنهائه دروسه حياة البحر لفترة قصيرة. ثم عمل مزارعاً. وانتقل في العالم 1822 إلى مدينة نيويورك، حيث ظل يجاهد كي تؤمناه كتاباته المستوى المعيشي الذي نشأ عليه. زودته طفولته وحياة البحر بمادة غنية لإحدى وعشرين رواية من رواياته الأربع والثلاثين. وكان أول كاتب أميركي ناجح يستخدم خلفية أميركية أصيلة في كتاباته، مما ساعد على تثبيت مكانته ككاتب عالمي. كما كان واحداً من كبار النقاد الاجتماعيين في زمانه. وكتابه هذا (1826، يكشف صورة من حياة أولئك المغامرين الذين عاشوا في عصر بناء قارة أميركا. وهو كتاب مغامرات مشوق يزيده تشويقاً الرسوم الملونة الرائعة التي تزين صفحاته.
