كانت عقارب الساعة تشير إلى الثامنة والنصف، حين دلف المفتش جادو ذو البشرة البيضاء والشعر الأسود إلى مكتبه مسرعا، في شركة الأمن ، وكان جادو يتميز بطول قامته وقوة بدنه، وملامح الذكاء تطل من عينيه. جلس جادو على مكتبه، يتصفح أخبار الصحف والمجلات، وهو يحتسي القهوة، وفجأة، رن صوت الهاتف، ورفع جادو السماعة على أذنه، فجاءه صوت المتصل متقطعا، تخرج كلماته من فمه بصعوبة بالغة، حتى أن المفتش جادو لم يتبين الكلمات، فصاح فيه قائلا: اهدأ يا رجل كي أفهم الأمر. فهدأ الرجل قليلا ثم قال: سيدي المفتش، أنا صاحب شركة الأغذية والتجارة التي تقع بالقرب من مكتبكم.
