يتناول هذا الكتاب بنية العقل دون التطرق إلى بيان مضمونه إلا بالقدر اللازم للتعرف على مبادئه الإجرائية. ويسعى لطرح رؤية بديلة تتطلع إلى التكامل المعرفي، وتستقي مبادئها المعرفية من نصوص الوحي الذي يحدد المعنى الكلي للوجود، ومن التجربة الإنسانية. ثم يتناول الكتاب ما يطرحه المنظور التراثي والمنظور الحداثي، وذلك لصعوبة قيام تواصل أو تحاور بينهما، ومن ثم عجز كلا المنظورين عن إحداث النقلة العلمية المطلوبة للنهوض بالأمة. وينتقل الكتاب إلى توصيف المنظور التراثي الذي يرى أن العلم ليس حركة فكرية مستمرة تهدف إلى تطبيق قدرات الإنسان العقلية على المعطيات المعرفية المتجددة ثم إلى توصيف المنظور الحداثي الذي لا يعي الطبيعة المرحلية التاريخية للحداثة الغربية، غافلاً عن الارتباط العضوي بين هذه الأطروحات الفكرية والتطور الحضاري للغرب. بعد ذلك يدرس الكتاب وينقد ويحلل عدداً من المبادئ والتصورات والمفاهيم الإطارية في العقلين التراثي التقليدي، والحداثي الوضعي، ومنهجيات التفكير التي تحكمها، مع تجنب الرؤية الأحادية الثاوية فيهما، والاستعانة عنها برؤية توحيدية تربط العلوي بالتجريبي، والمعياري بالوضعي. وتعرض الكتاب إلى جملة من التشوهات المعرفية والاضطرابات الفكرية التي تعود إلى إهمام مبدأ النظام والسقوط في نظرات تجزيئية تختزل الكل إلى بعض أجزائه، وتكتفي بإعمال العقل في أحد النظم الوجودية وإهمام النظم الأخرى. ويخلص الكتاب في دراسته للعقل والمنهجيات المؤدية لإعماله إلى التأكيد على أن النهضة التقانية والفاعلية الحضارية والتقدم العلمي، تتطلب تفاعل النزعات العلوية التي تحفز الفرد والمجتمع إلى الجد والاجتهاد لتحقيق قيم العدل والعلم والتعاون والتكامل، والقدرات العقلية التي تعينه على تحويل المثل السامية إلى نماذج تنظيمية ووسائل عملية ليتحقق التضافر بين كليات الوحي والوجود في رؤية تكاملية.
