ما إن وضعت الحرب العالمية الأولى أوزارها حتى اصطدمت الدول الكبرى المنتصرة في الحرب لتتقاسم الممتلكات العثمانية السابقة فيما بينها. فكانت سوريا من نصيب فرنسا، وآنذاك وجدت الحركة القومية العربية مرغمين على قبول الأمر الواقع وتقليص مشروعهم القومي، ما أدى بالتالي إلى إجهاضه بفعل قرارات أصدرتها القوى المنتصرة في الحرب، حيث أسفرت جميع الإجراءات في النهاية عن إحكام السيطرة الفرنسية على سوريا. في هذا الكتاب الذي يتمحور حول النضال الذي خاضه الوطنيون السوريون ضد الانتداب الفرنسي، يعرض المؤلف لمراحل هذا النضال منذ انهيار الحكم الوطني في دمشق وصولاً إلى جلاء القوات الفرنسية عن الأراضي السورية في العام 1946. والمؤلف يعتمد في عمله على منهج علمي يجنبه إصدار الأحكام إذ يجعل الوقائع تتحدث عن نفسها دون إبداء الرأي وإطلاق الأحكام على الحدث وصانعيه، وهو يعتمد على وثائق وزارة الخارجية الفرنسية ووثائق وزارة الحرب الفرنسية إضافة إلى إعداد كبيرة من الكتب والصحف والمجلات العربية التي عاصرت الأحداث.
