لقد ترددت كثيرًا في الكتابة والتأليف عن موضوع مصادر المعلومات المرجعية- رغم حبي له وتخصصي فيه- حيث إن هذا الموضوع أو المجال قد صدرت فيه بعض مصادر المعلومات على المستويين الأجنبي والعربي. لكن بعض هذه المؤلفات لا يغطي الأفكار والمعلومات التي يريد أن يبثها المؤلف.
ولتحقيق هذه الرغبة، فقد تم تقسيم هذا الكتاب إلى قسمين: القسم الأول هو القسم النظري ويتكون من خمسة فصول: الفصل الأول تم تخصيصه لدراسة مفاهيم وسمات مصادر المعلومات المرجعية، والفصل الثاني يدرس وظائف قسم المراجع ومؤهلات أخصائي المراجع ومهاراتهم، والفصل الثالث خصص لدراسة فئات مصادر المعلومات المرجعية، أما الفصل الرابع فتم فيه دراسة المراجع الرقمية، وخصص الفصل الخامس لدراسة معايير تقييم مصادر المعلومات المرجعية الورقية والرقمية، والقسم الثاني من الكتاب هو القسم التطبيقي، حيث إن "التطبيق من غير نظرية أعمى، والنظرية من غير تطبيق عقيمة"، حيث تم إعطاء نماذج تطبيقية لتقييم بعض مصادر المعلومات المرجعية تقييمًا يتفق مع المعايير التي تم طرحها في الكتاب هذا وقد تم ذكر معلومات ونماذج عن مصادر المعلومات المرجعية الرقمية بشكل مبسط؛ لأن ذلك مكانه مؤلفات أخرى لاستكمال الموضوع في البيئة الرقمية، ولن أدعي أنني قد بلغت ما قصدت، ولكن تلك هي البداية وسوف يتبعها التعديلات والإضافات وحسبي أن الهدف من ذلك الكتاب هو خدمة الطلاب والباحثين في تخصص المكتبات والمعلومات.
