عد قصة كفاح استطاع "ديفيد" أن يتعلم ويعول نفسه إلى أن وصل إلى درجة أستاذ اقتصاد بالجامعة، ويقع في حب إحدى طالباته، وتتوج قصة الحب بالزواج وإنجاب طفل جميل، ينال "ديفيد" شرف الاشتراك في مؤتمر قمة اقتصادية في إحدى الدول التي تسودها القلاقل والثورات ويؤسر الأستاذ ضمن ثمانية أعضاء ويتعرض للتعذيب ثم يعلم بعد ذلك عن مقتله. لكن "ديفيد" يستطيع أن يهرب بعد أ، تشوه وجهه وصوته وغيرت ملامحه نتيجة عمليات متتالية لمعالجة الجروح وآثار التعذيب. ويهرب إلى موطنه حيث يقرر عدم الكشف عن شخصيته إلا لأبيه الروحي الذي تولى رعايته وتولى أيضاً رعاية زوجته وابنه. ويرسم خطة ليعيش مع ابنه وزوجته التي أصبحت من كبيرات سيدات الأعمال والتي لم تتعرف عليه، وبناء على توصية أبيه الروحي يعمل عندها في مهنة مدير أعمالها. تتوالى الأحداث والمفاجآت ويقع فريسة الصراع بين إخفاء شخصيته والكشف عنها ولكل من الحالتين أخطارها. الأحداث مثيرة وسريعة ومليئة بالمفاجآت وآخر المفاجآت تجدها في نهاية الرواية.
