"يتعلق هذا الكتاب بمسيرة تحديث المجتمع الليبي، وهي مسيرة أدعي أنها بدأت – على نطاق ضيق – منذ النصف الثاني من القرن التاسع عشر، اقتطعت منها حقبة معينة وهي الحقبة التي بدأت بالانقلاب العسكري في اليوم الأول من شهر أيلول/سبتمبر من عام 1969 الذي أطلق من قاموا به اسم ثورة الفاتح. قام بالانقلاب حفنة من صغار ضباط الجيش بقيادة ملازم ثانٍ اسمه معمر محمد عبد السلام أبو منيار. ينتمي معمر إلى قبيلة القذافة، واشتهر فيما بعد بالقذافي أو العقيد. تربع معمر على المسرح السياسي الليبي، وكان اللاعب الرئيس في جميع الأحداث التي مر بها هذا المجتمع منذ اليوم الأول للانقلاب العسكري، ويفترض أن تأثيره في الأحداث الليبية انتهى يوم مماته في 20/10/2011. لكن يبدو أن تأثيره سيستمر لفترة طويلة رغم أن الموت غيبه عن ذلك الموقع المتميز الذي احتله في شاشات التلفزيون الرسمي طيلة الفترة الممتدة من الأول من شهر أيلول/سبتمبر 1969 إلى يوم 22/8/2011 وهو اليوم الذي توقف فيه البث الرسمي".
