لم يحز ابن باجة، وهو الفيلسوف المعروف على ما حازه نظرائه في المغرب الإسلامي، مثل ابن طفيل أو ابن رشد أو غيرهما، مع أن لابن باجه دوراً هاماً في مجال الفلسفة، وخاصة الفلسفة الطبيعية، لذا كان الاختيار لتحقيق كتابه "الحيوان" في سعي لأن تكون عملية التحقيق جزءاً من تحليل القول الفلسفي الطبيعي عند ابن باجة، وخاصة مبحثه البيولوجي. ينفتح هذا النص على عدة نصوص أخرى حيث يجعل إطاره المرجعي الأساسي أحد الأعمال الهامة لأرسطو في العلم الطبيعي، ألا وهو كتاب "الحيوان"، ولكن لا يقتصر الأمر على ذلك بل هو يعود إلى عدد آخر من أعمال أرسطو، ويقرأ النص الأرسطي قراءة نقدية تتجلى في وقفات من "المعلم الأول"، على الرغم من نزعته الأرسطية الواضحة. كما يعود إلى عدد من أعمال ابن باجة هو نفسه. ولذلك لم يقتصر توثيق المحقق لنص كتاب الحيوان على أعماله في العلم الطبيعي، بل هو استند إلى بعض نصوصه الفلسفية الأخرى، وخاصة تعاليقه على المؤلفات المنطقية للفارابي. ولا بد من الإشارة إلى أن المحقق استند بشكل رئيسي إلى مخطوط اكسفورد ومخطوط برلين. وقد استدعى منه ذلك كتابة مدخل مطوّل لشرح كيفية العمل على نص ابن باجة، وأمله بأن يكون بعمله هذا قد فتح الباب لتحقيق أعمال أخرى لهذا الفيلسوف العربي الهام
