وتدور أحداث الرواية في "قاو" في صعيد مصر، ويبدأ الشاعر روايته بكلمات والد "سالم أبوعقيل" والتي صارت تطارده خلال ممارسته عاداته اليومية والتي تأخذ طابع الحكي، إذ تبدأ بـ.. يا ولدي.. ويبدأ القص عن أسطورة قاو، والتي كانت مسرح الصراع بين إله الخير، وعمه إله الشر، والذي تشربت الأرض دمائه بعد أن تغلب عليه اله الخير بسهمه، ومن هنا أصابت اللعنة أرض "قاو" والتي أصبح لزاما عليها أن تتشرب الدم ليرتوي إله الشر ويرضى عنها. وتظهر الرواية أن سالم أبوعقيل شيخ عرب قاو، وهي مهمة أسندت إلى أسرته منذ أن جاء جد جده إلى مصر من نجد بأرض الحجاز، ومنذ ذلك الوقت أسند اليه محمد علي مهمة حراسة مدخل قاو من الأعراب المغيرين. وتتوالى الأحداث في قاو التي تتزايد فيها حوادث القتل بشكل متوالي، وكأن الأسطورة حقيقة، لكنها ومن خلال الأحداث تظل 1400 يوم بدون نقطة دم واحدة، إلى أن تحدث الأزمة"المجزرة" من خلال حيلة تكتيكية، يقتل خلالها 1400 من اهل المدينة ويهجر من تبقى من أسرة العقايلة إلى سيناء واسوان وسوهاج، وتلغى مشيخة العرب ليكون سالم ابو عقيل آخر شيخ عرب في قاو.
