طوال حياتي وأنا مطارد بمسائل الإبداع الساحرة. فلماذا "تطفو" من اللاوعي في لحظة معينة فكرة أصيلة في العلم أو الفن؟ وما العلاقة بين الموهبة والفعل المبدع، وبين الإبداع والموت؟ لماذا تمنحنا مسرحية صامتة أو راقصة كل هذه البهجة؟، سألت نفسي هذه الأسئلة لا بوصفي متفرجاً، ولكن بوصفي شخصاً يشارك هو نفسه في الفن والعلم. سألتها بدافع من الإثارة التي أعانيها، عندما أتأمل، على سبيل المثال، لونين من ألواني يختلطان ليخرج منهما لون ثالث لم أكن أتوقعه. أليس من السمات المميزة للكائن البشري أن يتوقف لحظة في سباق التطور المحموم ليرسم على جدران الكهف في لاساوكز وألتراميرا تلك الوعول والثيران البنية المشربة بالحمرة التي مازالت تملأنا بالإعجاب والرهبة الممتزجين بالدهشة؟ ماذا لو أن إدراك الجمال كان حد ذاته سبيلاً للحقيقة؟ ماذا لو أن "الرشاقة"- كما يستخدمها علماء الفيزياء لوصف إكتشافاتهم- كانت مفتاحاً للواقع النهائي؟ ماذا لو كان جويس على حق في قوله: إن الفنان يبع "الوعي اللامخلوق للجنس البشري؟"......
أما العنوان فقد أوحى به إلى كتاب بول تيليتش "الشجاعة من أجل الوجود" وهذا دين يسعدني أن أعترف به، غير أن الإنسان لا يمكن أن "يوجد" في فراغ، لهذا فنحن نعبر عن وجودنا بالإبداع. فا\لإبداع تكملة ضرورية للوجود. وفضلا عن ذلك، فإن كلمة "الشجاعة"، الواردة في عنواني، تشير- بعد الصفحات القلائل الأولى من الفصل الأول- إلى ذلك النوع الخاص من الشجاعة اللازمة لفعل الإبداع، ونادراً ما نعترف به في مناقشاتنا التي تدور حول الإبداع، والكتابة عنه أكثر ندرة.
