ولد في الكفرون في سورية عام 1933 توفي والده عندما كان بسن العاشرة فانتقلت عائلته للعيش في بيروت حيث نشأ.
عملت أمه وكافحت لتعيل العائلة وتعلم أبناءها.
حصل على شهادتي البكالوريوس والماجستير في علم الاجتماع من الجامعة الاميركية في بيروت ثم دكتوراه في علم النفس الاجتماعي من جامعة متشغن في الولايات المتحدة ( آن آربور) 1966 .
له العديد من المؤلفات والمقالات المنشورة منها القمم الخضراء (1956) الصمت والمطر (1958) ستة أيام (1961) عودة الطائر إلى البحر (1969) الرحيل بين السهم والوتر (1979) طائر الحوم (1988) إنانة والنهر (1995) المدينة الملونة (2006)

نقرأ في هذا الكتاب أربع قصص قصيرة للروائي وأستاذ علم الإجتماع "حليم بركات" يتناول فيها الواقع اللبناني والعربي عموماً منذ ستينيات القرن العشرين مروراً بنكسة حزيران، وحتى مرحلة الإحتلال الأميركي للعراق في عام 2003. القصة الأولى (رياح وظلال) تتحدث عن ضياع الشباب العربي من خلال إعترافات سالم بحبه للنساء وللكحول وهو بهذا يحاول نسيان الأحزان القومية والإجتماعية والسياسية... القصة الثانية (حجر يغوص في البحيرة)، الحجر هو الأديب اللبناني سعيد تقي الدين، والبحيرة هي الواقع اللبناني المرير، هي قصة قصيرة يفعل بطلها ما يريد، يوزع الأموال التي جمعها على كل صديق ومحتاج، إنه الأديب والمسرحي سعيد تقي الدين. قصة محبوكة بسيناريو تصويري ناجح يعكس صورة صادقة عن مسؤولية المثقف تجاه وطنه. القصة الثالثة (ماذا حدث في "حديثا") قصة عن العراق الحديث فيها إدانة وشجب صارخ لجرائم الإحتلال الأميركي للعراق واستنهاض الثقافة الشعرية العراقية و"حديثا" هي بلدة عراقية اقتحمها الجنود الأميركيون وقتلوا فيها دون رأفة سبعة من أفراد عائلة عراقية لا ذنب لهم سوى أنهم سهروا الليل يتبادلون الأغاني العراقية النابضة بالغضب والثورة. القصة الأخيرة (أسمع المطر يتساقط فوق خالد عبد الحليم) ينقلنا خلالها الروائي إلى مناخ عائلة فلسطينية التحق فيها الشاب بسام بالعمل الفدائي كي يجد لحياته المعنى والقيمة في زمن انهيار المعاني والقيم بعد هزيمة حزيران عام 1967.
