المثقف العربي يعيش فى وضع بالغ الصعوبة من التخلف على كل مستوى وفى كل مجال. ولعل هذا الوضع هو ما يميز المثقف العربي، تحدياً عن قرينه المثقف الأوروبى أو الأمريكى الذى يعيش مجتمع التقدم والوفرة وعلى عاتق المثقف العربي المسكين مهمة مزدوجة طرفها الأول مواجهة أبشع صور التخلف والفساد والاستبداد ولاقهر فى أقطاره، وطرفها الثانى الاطلاع على ما لدى العالم المتقدم من إنجازات إبداعية وفكرية وعملية، لعلها تعينه على بلواه، وتسهم فى تقوية عزيمته، كى يواجه عوائق التخلف التى تشد إلى الماضى المظلم، ويستبدل بها بذور التقدم المشرق. وهى مهمة بالغة الصعوبة، تكاد أن تكون بالغة الاستحالة. ولكنها فى كل مستوياتها الصراعية ومجالاتها السجالية تدفع هذا المثقف إلى أن ينظر حوله فى غضب أو - على الأقل- يكتب مقالات غاضبة. وهو أضعف الإيمان.
