تشير مختلف النصوص التاريخية المتوافرة أن مصر الفرعونية استثمرت نهر النيل ملاحياً بصورة تدعو للإعجاب والتقدير. وأن المراكب والسفن قد أدت دوراً هاماً طوال عصور التاريخ المصري القديم. وهناك صور ونقوش ونصوص ترجع إلى عصر الأسرة التاسعة عشرة تجسد وتشير إلى معارك بحرية قد جرت، مما يوضح أن رجال الأسطول كان لهم دور في المعارك التي دارت خلال هذه الحقبة من التاريخ. وقد استمر تطور البحرية المصرية عبر التاريخ حيث كان لها دور متميز وأسبقية في فن بناء السفن وبالتالي كان لمصر أسطولاً منذ عهد الفراعنة. وقد كان لذلك الأسطول دور هام في حروبها ونزاعاتها مع من حولها، بالإضافة إلى ذلك كانت له نشاطاته التي برزت حيناً وخبت حيناً آخر. هذا وإن هذا التاريخ للبحرية المصرية يعود لموقع مصر الجغرافي الذي أثر على استراتيجيتها وسياستها البحرية، حيث تعد مصر من الدول ذات السواحل الطويلة بالنسبة لمساحتها 1,019,600 كيلومتر مربع، إذ تمتد سواحلها لمساحة تقرب من 3900 كيلومتر على البحرين المتوسط والأحمر. ويبلغ الساحل المصري على البحر المتوسط الممتد من رفح إلى السلوم حوالي 965 كيلومتراً. أما ساحلها الشرقي الممتد من بئر طابا شمالاً حتى الحدود المصرية السودانية فهو حوالي 1931 كيلومتراً. وفي هذا الكتاب يدوّن الباحث لتاريخ البحرية المصرية وذلك منذ عهد محمد علي إلى عهد الرئيس أنور السادات، مستعرضاً نشاطات تلك البحرية والحروب التي خاضتها والمعارك التي كان لها دور كبير فيها، بالإضافة إلى الدور الهائم الذي لعبته هذه البحرية في السيطرة على سواحل البحر المتوسط مستعيناً لذلك كله بمراجع كثيرة، ومعتمداً على جهود أساتذة وعلماء كان لهم اهتمامات ودراسات في هذا المجال.
