لا شك أن دراسة السيرة الذاتية - بوصفها جنساً أدبياً له حضوره الفاعل، ربما يكون مدخلاً مهماً لتناول جزئيات مهمة، ما زالت مطروحة في مجال البحث، ومنها انفتاحها على أجناس عديدة، وطبيعة دورها الذي يتغير باستمرار، طبقاً للسياق الثقافي بشكل عام، وطبقاً للتوجه النظري أو النقدي بشكل خاص، فالكاتب قاسم حداد، يعتمد مقاربة جديدة في تقاليد السيرة، يضمنها في كتابه المعنون "ليست بهذا الشكل ولا بشكل آخر" ما يحيلنا لقول تودروف في مقالته الشهيرة (The orgin of genen) والتي يشير فيها إلى أهمية الأجناس الأدبية بصفة عامة، من خلال قوله: "لا يكون هناك أدب بدون أجناس أدبية، إنها نظام للتحول المستمر، وسؤال أصل الأجناس، لا يمكن أن يكون منفصلاً تاريخياً عن حقل الأجناس الأدبية نفسها". أما الشاعر والكاتب قاسم حداد في هذه السيرة فينوه في (المقدمة) التي يفتتح بها عمله هذا، بكلام يتوجه به إلى القارىء والناقد معاً بالقول: " ... وعندما يجري التعامل مع هذه السيرة بوصفها مكتوبة على هامش النص، فإن نشرها، مرصوفةً بليلٍ كثيفٍ يشغل الهامش بهواجس رافقت حياة الشخص وتجربة النص، هو ضربٌ من أشكال الرغبة التي خالجتني طوال الوقت، في تحقيق تجربة قراءة الكتاب بوصفه قطعة من حياة الكاتب، بكافة أشكال ممارسته الأدبية، باعتباره - الكتاب - جامع لحظات عديدة غاية في التنوع، مثل الحياة، وبهذا نكون قد أتحنا لأنفسنا - الكاتب والقارىء في آن - محاولة إعادة النظر في مفهوم "الكتاب" في الأساس، بمعنى أن تجاوز حدود النوع الأدبي، يمكن أن يقترح علينا في الوقت نفسه، العمل على تجاوز مفهوم الكتاب وصورته المحددة - تقنياً - والمقتصرة على "شكل" واحد، ثابت، لمادته (...) سيرة النص، هنا، عبارة عن حوار ذاتي مع النفس، تتوق للإتصال بأرواح يؤرقها القلق ذاته، وتذهب إلى ذات الأفق، ولكنها تقدر، في الوقت نفسه، على العمل بأدوات وآليات مختلفة متنوعة ومتغايرة في كل تجربة وكل نص".
كتب قاسم حداد هذه السيرة في فترات متباعدة، تمتد من منتصف الثمانينات حتى منتصف التسعينيات، في صيغة استجابات مختلفة وسياقات متنوعة: أجوبة على أسئلة في حوار، تعليق، مقال، مداخلة في ندوة، أو ذهاب ذاتي للبوح في صورة تأمل، يستبطن التجربة بآليات تتراوح بين الشك والثقة واليقين.
