يُعتقد أنه منذ 10.000سنة قد خلت كان يعيش 8 مليون نسمة وفي عام 2000 وصل تعداد سكان الأرض 6000 مليون نسمة. إن هذا التزايد المستمر في تعداد السكان يجهد استخدام موارد الأرض فالإستنزاف الجائر لموارد الأرض ينتج عنه اختلال في البيئة ونفاذ للطاقة الغير متجددة. وهذا ينعكس سلباً على حياة البشر في كوكبنا المعطاء. ومن المعروف لعلماء الإقتصاد أن مصادر الثروة هي القشرة الأرضية والعمل ورأس المال ولكن العمل ورأس المال يمثلان الجانب المعنوي في الموضوع الإقتصادي فيبقى المصدر الوحيد الأصيل وهو القشرة الأرضية وما تحويه من مواد صلبة (كالمعادن والصخور) أو سائلة (الماء والنفط) أو غاز.
وإن أبرز مظاهر حياة الأمم وشعوبها تلك المرتبة والدرجة الإقتصادية والحضارية التي تحتلها بين أمم كوكب الأرض وذلك في فترة حضارية أو أكثر والتي تتنافس فيها الشعوب وتتزاحم للوصول إلى أرقى المرتبات والمكانة الإقتصادية والحضارية في منطقتها أو إقليمها أو قارتها بل العالم. ويبلغ مدى تمكن الأمم وشعوبها من تلك المكانة تبعاً لمدى استغلالها لمواردها الطبيعية وما يتمتع به إنسانها من نشاط وجهد عضلي وفكري وعددي مدعم بإمكاناته الصحيحة والمادية.
وبالتالي فإن التعمق في معرفة مكونات القشرة الأرضية موضوع حيوي بالنسبة لكل دولة إذ أنه لا يمكن لأية دولة أن تخطط لاقتصادها أو لهندسة مدنها وقراها ومنشآتها أو لنمو سكانها وتوفير الماء لهم أو لزراعتها أو لصناعتها دون الإعتماد بشكل أو بآخر على معرفة أرض بلادهم وذلك بدراسة علمية عميقة دقيقة.
