اسمه ونسبه: محمد بن محمد بن محمد بن أحمد أبو حامد الغزالي الطوسي، ويلقب بزين الدين، وبحجة الإسلام.
والغزَّالي «نسبته إلى صناعة الغزل», والغزَالي «نسبته إلى غزالة من قرى طوس», قاله الزركلي في الأعلام وقال الصفدي: «قيل: إنه قال في بعض مصنفاته: ونسبني قوم إلى الغزَّال، وإنما أنا الغَزَالي نسبة إلى قرية يقال لها غزالة بتخفيف الزاي.
والله أعلم» .
مولده ووفاته: مولده ووفاته في الطابران (قصبة طوس، بخراسان).
قال ابن السبكي: « وكانت وفاته قدس الله روحه بطوس يوم الاثنين رابع عشر جمادى الآخرة سنة خمس وخمسمائة ودفن بظاهر قصبة طابران» .
مشيخته: من جملة شيوخ الغزالي إمام الحرمين أبو المعالي الجويني, وأحمد بن محمد الراذكاني, والإمام أبو نصر الإسماعيلي, وأبو سهل محمد ابن عبد الله الحفصي, والقاضي أبو الفتح الحاكمي الطوسي, وأبو عبد الله محمد بن أحمد الخواري, وغيرهم.
تلامذته: من تلاميذه الذين أخذوا عنه أبو طاهر الجرجاني, وابن تومرت الملقب بالمهدي, وأبو بكر ابن العربي, وغيرهم.

هذا الكتاب يبين المؤلف فيه طريق العلم النافع الذي يصلح القلب ويزكي النفس, ويؤدي الى صلاح الدنيا وسعادة الآخرة. وقد استوفى المؤلف مسائل هذا العلم عن طريق نشر النصائح والوصايا والأدعية من كتاب الله وسنة رسوله صلى الله عليه وسلم. ومن مقاصد هذا الكتاب بيان أن الطاعة والعبادة هما خلاصة العلم بالله, ومتابعة الشارع في الأوامر والنواهي بالقول والفعل, عملاً بقوله تعالى: (وأن للإنسان إلا ما سعى) وإحياءً لشريعة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم, إضافة إلى ما تضمنه من تهذيب الأخلاق وسمو النفس, فمن لم يوجه النفس بصدق المجاهدة فلن يحيا قلبه بأنوار المعرفة. هذا الكتاب بما تضمنه من أقوال الصالحين وأحوالهم وسلوكهم في سبيل الحق, يدل على خلاصة الحياة الهانئة الرضية للإنسان. ويلمس القراء في هذا المؤلف اللطيف الحجم, دقة اختيار الغزالي وجمال أسلوبه وتذوقه وسهولة عبارته. وذلك ليقرب الى أفهامهم معنى الفضائل والنصائح, وينفذ الى عقولهم مغزى الحكايات فتهديهم الى محاسن الشيم ومكارم الأخلاق.
الغزالي: هو محمد بن محمد الغزالي الطوسي, كنيته: أبو حامد. ولد سنة 450هجرية, بالطابران, وكان والده يغزل الصوف ويبيعه في دكان بطوس, كان رحمه الله تعالى فقيهاً شافعياً, لم يكن في آخر عصره مثله, متصوفاً, بارعاً بالأصول, والجل والمنطق والفلسفة. توفي رحمه الله تعالى: يوم الاثنين 14جمادى الآخرة, سنة 505هجرية ودفن بظاهرها, ولم يعقب من الأولاد إلا البنات.
