يضم هذا الكتاب مختارات من مقالات الدكتور ماهر شفيق فريد- أستاذ الأدب الانجليزي بجامعة القاهرة- في الفترة ما بين 1961 و2007. وقد كسره المؤلف على تسعة أقسام هي: افتتاحيات ذاتية الصبغة، أدب مفتوحة، على تخوم الفلسفة، أيها المترجم! أيها الخائن؟ آداب أجنبية. وإذ يتحرك الكتاب علي هذه المحاور التسعة فإنه يشكل تسع دوائر متحدة المركز. والمركز المتحد في كل الأحوال هو الإيمان بقدرة الأدب على تعديل نظرة الإنسان إلى الحياة- ولو قليلًا- وسبر بعد- وإن ضئيلًا- من أبعاد اللغز الكوني الهائل، والرقي بالوعي والوجدان والحساسية، مهما تحالفت عليها عوامل الغلظة والقبح والفجاجة.
