تدور أحداث الرواية حول العلاقات البشرية وكيفية مواجهة المواقف الصعبة التى نواجهها عندما يخسر المرء شيئا ما طالما اشتاق إليه أو يصيبهم الإحباط بسبب معرفة حقيقته،حيث طرحت الكاتبة تساؤلا فى بداية روايتها كيف يمكننا التعامل مع الواقع إذا لم نعد نرغب فيه أو نتعايش معه ؟ هذا ما تحاول الكاتبة لويز دين إجابته فى روايتها. وذلك من خلال حكاية اثنين من الأزواج يقضون عطلتهم الأخيرة بعد دخول الزوج المرحلة القبل الأخيرة من السرطان ويحاول إضفاء بعض المبررات العقلانية عن انفصاله عن زوجته التى يدفعها ضجرها إلى خيانته، كما تحاول أيضا من خلال الرواية دفع القارئ إلى إعادة النظر بشأن الزواج والحب وعجز أبطال الرواية عن التواصل بكفاءة وترسم أوجاعهم ومشاعرهم.
