يعتبر (جيمس واط) أول من حقق الآلة البخارية (إنكلترا 1750) مذللاً بذلك أشد العقبات، التي كانت تعترض طريق الصناعة وهي تأمين القوة اللازمة لآليات النقل (المحرك)، ويحقق بعده في سنة (1768) كونبوت في فرنسا، وبعد محاولات عديدة، سيارته المشهورة (السيارة النارية)، وهي أول سيارة درجت على الطريق، وإنما كان ينقصها أجهزة للتوجيه، فذهبت بشكل مستقيم وتلاشت بحادثة اصطدام. ولقد ظهرت كذلك حوالي سنة 1825 عدة سيارات غريبة التصميم في إنكلترا. ثارت ثائرة شركات الخطوط الحديدية، واستطاعت تلك الشركات أن تجبر الحكومات على سن قوانين قاسية للغاية كي يخنقوا في المهد كل محاولة لصنع السيارات، وهي أن يسير شخص حاملاً علماً أحمر أمام كل سيارة تسير في الطريق وعلى مسافة لا تقل على مائة متر، كي ينبه المارة، ودام هذا القانون حتى سنة 1896، وبالرغم من كل ذلك فلم يثن ذلك من عزيمة المخيلات المخترعة. فنرى أن (بيجو) في فرنسا يصمم الجهاز التفاضلي، ويمكن القول بأن السنة الذهبية التي بدأت فيها المحاولات الناجحة والتقدم المجدي؛ هي سنة 1878، بعد أن احتل البخار الصدارة كقوة محركة خلال ثلاثين سنة، فلقد توصل (موليه) سنة 1878 إلى إيجاد آلية درجت بسرعة 35 كلم في الساعة، بيد أن أول توصل إلى سرعة 100 كلم في الساعة، ثم إلى سرعة 200 كلم في الساعة هو سير (يوليه) وذلك حوالي 1906، وأثناء ذلك توصل الباحثون إلى إيجاد المحرك الذي يعمل بالمحروقات ذي استطاعته أكبر وحجم أقل من حجم المحرك البخاري. ويأتي (بردي روشا) سنة 1876 بحركة الانفجاري ذي الدورة الرباعية ويتبنى صنع المحركات (بانهارد – بيجو – رينو) وذلك سنة 1896، وهذا هو التاريخ الحقيقي لظهور السيارات ظهوراً حقيقياً. وتتوالى بعد ذلك وتزداد التحسينات على السيارات دون انقطاع، إذ نافس أصحاب المصانع بعضهم بعضاً ففتشوا عن تحسين صفات المحركات حيث زادوا استطاعتها وقللوا من مصروفها النسبي ومن حجمها، وكذلك فقد حسنوا أجهزة الوصل والتعليق وأمنوا الراحة التامة للمسافرين. وفي كل سنة تظهر لنا عبقريات مختلفة من مختلف الدول الصناعية والمصدرة للسيارات. وفي هذه الموسوعة معلومات شاملة حول تلك الآلة (السيارة) وتاريخ تطور صناعتها وآلية عملها وأجهزتها الميكانيكية وكل ما يتعلق بها من تقنيات. توزعت تلك المواضيع على أجزاء الموسوعة الأربعة وكانت كالتالي: الكتاب الأول: المحركات، أنواعها، وطرائق عملها، وتزيينها وتبريدها، وكل ما يتعلق بها. الكتاب الثاني: أجهزة نقل الحركة، وأجهزة قيادة السيارة على اختلافها. الكتاب الثالث: التجهيزات الكهربائية وطرائق صيانة السيارات وإصلاحها. الكتاب الرابع: معجم يشتمل على أسماء أجزاء السيارة باللغة العربية والإنكليزية والفرنسية وفق الأبجديات الثلاث. وهذا المعجم هو موضوع في نهاية كل كتاب وفق الأبجدية الغربية فقط. وتجدر الإشارة إلى أن المؤلف هو ضابط متقاعد، تعلم الميكانيك في دورات عدة في فرنسا، ودرّسه سنوات لمختلف الرتب والاختصاصين.
