كتاب ثواب الأعمال وكتاب عقاب الأعمال يعدان من نفائس كتب التّرغيب والتّرهيب، ألّفها شيخنا الصّدّوق رحمه اللّه على نحو النّهج الذي سلكه غير واحد من العلماء، جرياً وراء التّأثير على القلوب، واجتهاداً في امتلاك الوجدان وصيد العواطف لتصحيح سلوك الإنسان وإصلاحه، وتوجيهه نحو الخير، والنحياش به عن الرّذائل والمعاصي واقتراف الآثام والجرائم.
وبعد فكلّ منهما أثر نفيس في بابه.
ونظراً لتقارب موضوعيهما على رغم التّضاد بين اسميهما فقد جمعا في جلّ ما وجد من نسخهما المخطوطة كما أنّهما طبعاً معاً مكرراً، فصار وكأنّهما كتاب واحد.
ففي سنة 1298-1299ه، طبعا بإيران في تبريز طبعة حجرية في 109-52 صفحة.
وفي سنة 1321ه، طبع ثواب الأعمال طبعة حجرية في إيران. وفي سنة 1962م، طبعا في بغداد طبعة حروفية في 270 صفحة. وفي هذه الطبعة قام مشكوراً فضيلة السيّد أحمد الأسكوري سلّمه اللّه بمقابلة الأصل قبل الطبع على نسخة خطية بمكتبة "آية اللّه الحكيم العامّة في النّجف" برقم 846 مخطوطات وتاريخ نسخ الكتاب الأوّل "ثواب الأعمال" سنة 1027، وتاريخ نسخ الكتاب الثاني "عقاب الأعمال" سنة 1028، وهي بقلم محمد خليفة الجزائري مولداً والسمناني مسكناً، وسجل في الهامش بعض ما وجده من فروق.
